About Us
Mission
Artes Christi Australia is a national Catholic arts organization founded in January 2006 as a joint initiative of the Carnivale Christi committees in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane & Wagga Wagga.
Artes Christi seeks the Face of Christ through culture. Emerging as it did from amongst university students, Artes Christi considers young people as an evangelical priority for the Church at this moment in history. Nonetheless, Artes Christi recognizes the significant cultural divide even within the Church (to say nothing of broader society) between younger and older generations and seeks to express in a tangible way that the Church can embrace all cultures.
Artes Christi recognizes that there are certain modes and traditions of culture that are appropriate in a liturgical context and others that are more appropriate in contexts beyond the liturgy. In a pluralistic & minimalist culture, Artes Christi affirms the need for cultural progression and renewal. It does not seek to revive a past tradition or heritage - it seeks for new expressions. Nonetheless, Artes Christi starts from a belief that it is only possible to develop culture into the future if this progression is built on an appreciation of the strengths and pitfalls of the cultures of the past.
Apart from its principal event - Carnivale Christi - Artes Christi Australia also seeks to contribute to the community by staging exhibitions, productions, missions, artists retreats, balls and projects of particular apostolic or cultural interest.
